Library@Esplanade pays tribute to Leni Riefenstahl

22 Aug 1902 - 8 Sep 2003

Library@Esplanade is paying tribute to controversial film-maker Leni Riefenstahl who died on 8 Sep 2003, aged 101.

Riefenstahl became a favourite of German dictator Adolf Hitler in the 1930s, making films for his fascist regime. Her most famous work was Triumph of the Will, a propaganda film showing a Nazi rally in Nuremberg in 1934.

Her Nazi documentaries were hailed as groundbreaking film-making, pioneering techniques involving cranes, tracking rails, and many cameras working at the same time.

Reni Riefenstahl's films available at library@esplanade are as follows:

Triumph Of The Will (1934)

This film, commissioned by Adolf Hitler to record the 1934 Nazi party rally in Nuremberg, is the "most powerful piece of propaganda ever produced". Included are many scenes of gatherings, marches, and parades. The viewer will also hear speeches given by Hitler, Goering, Goebbels, and Hess as well as samples of monumental architecture designed by Albert Speer.

The Wonderful, Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl (1993)

Documentary, directed and written by Ray Muller, featuring interviews with Leni Riefenstahl (then in her nineties), flash-backs and modern film sequences tell the story of the most famous woman film director of all time. Known for her films made during the Third Reich, Riefenstahl's story is a controversial one. She is best known for her "Triumph of the Will," the film made of the 1934 Nazi Party Congress, but also made a variety of narrative and anthropological films.
