Rock On - National Sports Climbing Championship 2003

Source: SAFRA Yishun Country Club

Rock On is back - with a vengeance and this year a record number of participants is seen with the under 20’s categories being the biggest. The event is jointly organised by SAFRA Singapore Mountaineering Federation and Singapore Sports Council.

Over 800 participants will scale the walls at the National Rock Climbing Centre, SAFRA Yishun Country Club to compete for the title of champion. For three weekends, contestants of the speed and difficulty categories will oppose gravity as they make their way up the walls.

The first rounds commenced yesterday, 14 Jun 2003, and the finals for the Speed Category will be held today, Sunday 15 Jun 2003. The difficulty events will take place on 22, 25 & 28 Jun 2003. Guest-of-Honour Associate Professor Ho Peng Kee will grace the finals on 28 Jun 2003.

Rock On, as the championship is fondly referred to, has become Asia’s largest climbing event today. The growing interest in the sport gives hope for Singapore one day delivering a world champion. At UIAA-ICC Climbing World Cup 2002, Singapore climbers, Mohd Halil (32 years old) and Mohd Hatta  (23 years old) came in 6th and 10th respectively in the ‘Speed Category’.
