New Jalan Besar Stadium opens

© getforme.com

After three years of upgrading works, the new S$33.5-million Jalan Besar Stadium reopened for matches in March 2003. The stadium was closed in December 1999.

The new stadium has four changing rooms, a VIP room, a gym, a fan club and lecture rooms. It also has a new 24-hour 500-seat food court occupying about 9,910 sq ft of space. The food court is scheduled to open this month. The stadium has a basement carpark, in addition to the open carpark spaces along its entire length, and next to French Road as well as Tyrwhitt Road.

Nested next to the new stadium in the area where the old hawker centre was situated is the new Jalan Besar Swimming Complex which was opened earlier this month.

The maiden game at the stadium was played on 4 March 2003 when the Lions defeated Maldives 4:1 in a friendly match. The stadium is home to the Under-23 team.

There are altogether 6,000 bucket-type seats, with room for expansion if the need arises. The old stadium seated 5,500 people on benches. However, unlike other stadiums, there isn't any running track.
