Monday with the Editor: New top menu for our Web site

Hallo everyone

We now have a new top menu for our FrontPage. You can see it above. It's the first time since we went online in late 1999 that we have redesigned the top menu. Previously, we merely added each new section as our Web site's content expanded. We started with a mere 30+ sections.

So, as time passed, the top menu became cluttered and we found it was quite difficult for our visitors to find the section (we too had similar problems) which they were looking for as there were well over 100 sections spread between our FrontPage and our MoreSections page.

We have transferred some of the sections listed on our MoreSections page to the new top menu and removed the link from this FrontPage to the MoreSections page. Therefore, you can't get to the MoreSections page from this FrontPage anymore. But, we can't do away with the MoreSections page as visitors who move deep into our database - containing over 5,300 Web pages - will need that Web page in their hunt for additional sections.

We have not put the new menu on those Web pages which went to press before May 2003. We do not intend to either. That would be changing the face of our past which we want preserved unadulterated. That's the reason why as you move into our 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 editions, you will notice changes along the way. That's the way we looked in the past. Isn't it great this way, I mean, that we can go into our past and see it still there the way it was.

We don't want to go the way of other Web sites - wiping out the old design totally and starting their makeover on a clean slate. That would be tantamount to denying we had a past.

However, our main sections - numbering about 100 - will sport the new top menu. By the way, we have reintroduced our SEARCH feature as visitors have written in to us requesting such a feature. We hope you will enjoy many repeat visits here. Have fun!

NEW WEB SITES is the official SARS Web site in Singapore. It pools together SARS-related information from all Singapore Government sites and presents it for various local and foreign audiences. It also contains the latest SARS-related press releases and selected media articles.

We are now 5312 pages thick and growing.
