Mobile Lifestyle - new magazine in town

This April, a monthly magazine on mobile phone and gadgets has popped up at newsstands and bookstores in town. Mobile Lifestyle joins TECH and HardWare Mag, its established rivals, in the battle for readers' eyeballs.

The maiden April 2003 issue is 50 pages thick and its regular sections cue the reader in on the latest technology developments in town, introduce accessories for a mobile lifestyle and show how to take care of these gadgets. Other tidbits included are CD and  movie reviews.

Five pages of stuff on popular boyband 5566 are dished out for the readers' digestion, suggesting perhaps, the magazine has its focus on the younger set of readers. A look at the editorial page reveals more. Editor Serene HO says "we have come up with Mobile Lifestyle, your perfect companion in your mobile lifestyle. This magazine is for you, the go-getter who craves for all things mobile (handphones, PDAs, laptop...) and lives your life to the fullest."

In these difficult times, it is certainly brave of the people behind the magazine to put out the magazine, especially when some recent new magazines have folded up after only a few issues. And from the contents of this first issue, it appears the new kid on the block has some catching up to do before it can compete head-on with the bigger boys - TECH and HardWare Mag. Perhaps it may be fishing for a slice of the under-20s market.

Monday's News

Prime Minister GOH Chok Tong yesterday announced the setting up of a ministerial task force, headed by Home Affairs Minister WONG Kan Seng, to deal with all aspects of the SARS outbreak, including what to do if the worst happens. Mr GOH had this message for Singaporeans: "There is life. With terrorism, with the Iraq war, with Sars, we are going to live as near normal a life as possible." (1)

PSB Corporation, which offers training, consulting, technology and testing services, will be taking in 600 students in its present campuses in Bukit Merah and Toa Payoh in July 2003. The company is in a joint venture with Australia's James Cook University to set up a replica of its Queensland campus here, with all its facilities and programmes. The school's new campus will be ready in 2007. By then, it hopes to attract some 5,000 students, with foreigners making up 80 per cent of the school's population. (H6)
