Results of 2002 Singapore-Cambridge GCE A Level Exam

In October 2000, the Ministry of Education (MOE) announced that it was assuming greater control over the Singapore-Cambridge GCE A-level examination with effect from the 2002 examination.

MOE has now taken over responsibility for the development of our A-Level examination syllabuses and examination formats, the setting of standards and the award of grades. MOE and University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) have worked together to ensure that the rigorous standards of our A-Level examinations are maintained.

The examination results showed that our candidates were able to meet the requirements and changes in the revised syllabuses. Credit must be given to schools and candidates for preparing themselves adequately for the revised examination syllabuses.

The results of the 2002 and 2001 examinations for school candidates are as follows:

Year No. Sat Minimum 2 A& 2 AO-Level Passes including GP Minimum 2 A & 2 AO-Level Passes Minimum One A-Level Pass
No. % No. % No. %
2002 11,669 10,393 89.1 11,373 97.5 11,619 99.6
2001  11,575 10,153 87.7 11,293 97.6 11,506 99.4

The performance of the 2002 school candidates shows a slight improvement compared to that of the previous cohort. The proportion of candidates who obtained 4 As has also increased slightly from 11.8% to 12.9%.

A total of 2,142 private candidates sat for the 2002 examination. Of these, 769 or 35.9% obtained at least one A-Level pass.

Last year, 167 parents filed beyond parental control complaints - a 44 per cent increase on the previous year - and the problem coincides with rising juvenile crime. Statistics released by the police last week show that the number of youngsters 15 years old and under arrested in 2002 shot up by 55 per cent, compared to 2001. In 2002, 45 youngsters were sent to institutions, such as the Toa Payoh Girls' Home and the Singapore Boys' Home. (1)

Only nine shop units out of the 34 shop units in the Ten Mile Junction shoppping centre are occupied. Its landlord, the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) is planning to reposition the centre, which opened in 1999, as a one-stop learning centre. (4)

In 2002, the Central Narcotics Bureau's (CNB) haul of 13,000 Ecstasy pills was just a little over half the 24,000 pills seized in 2001. In the five years between 1996 and 2001, the number of known Ecstasy abusers here plunged from 661 to 151. (H3)
