SARS: MOH to hold Commemoration Ceremony

Source: www.gov.sg

The Ministry of Health, together with the National Healthcare Group and Singapore Health Services, will be holding a commemoration ceremony to
remember those who succumbed to Sars and to honour our healthcare workers for their determination and perseverance in their fight against Sars.

The ceremony will be held on Tuesday, 22 July 2003, 6.30pm at the Singapore Botanic Gardens (Palm Valley). The Guest of Honour will be Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong.

"The ceremony will provide us with an opportunity to remember those who have passed on and allow us to share with the next-of-kin the memories of
their loved ones" said Ms Chang Hwee Nee (Chairperson, Organising Committee / Deputy Secretary, MOH).

"At the same time, we want to acknowledge the dedication and valour of healthcare workers who stood united in the battle against Sars" added Ms
Chang.

The simple ceremony is meant to be dignified and uplifting. The programme for the ceremony entails performances by the Singapore Chinese Orchestra
and the Tampines Primary School Choir.

Botanic Gardens will be presented with a sapling of a Tembusu tree. This tree symbolises the spirit of the people of Singapore who rallied together in a time of adversity. The tree will be located within the grounds of the Botanic Gardens.

The ceremony will be attended by the next-of-kin of the deceased, recovered patients, members of the Sars Combat Team and Sars Ministerial Committee, representatives from NHG, SingHealth, Health Promotion Board, Health
Sciences Authority, Nursing Homes, Community and Private Hospitals, professional bodies and agencies involved in the fight against Sars.

The event will also be open to members of the public. Further details of the ceremony will be announced nearer to the date of the
event.
