Monday with the Editor: Christmas Trees 2003

Hallo everyone

Since 2001 we have been going around shopping centres to take pictures of Christmas trees put up by the respective shopping centres.

This year, we are continuing with our annual practice. Shopping centres around the island have started putting up their Christmas trees. However, some shopping centres - which in previous years put up Christmas trees - this year appear to be doing without their Christmas tree decorations.

It could be a sign of the times. This year has been a pretty bad one for Asia and the rest of the world, what with SARS and terrorism playing havoc with our minds. Tourism has suffered along with other industries.

But, SARS and terrorism cannot wipe out the spirit of Christmas. Along Orchard Road - the shopping belt of Singapore, thousands of Singaporeans and tourists ascend upon the shops during the weekends. 'Tis the season of giving and forgiving.

Whilst we partake in the fun this Christmas, let us not forget to remain vigilant against violent forces which know no boundaries. There are people out there who for some morbid reasons choose to attack peace and stability. Fortunately, here in Singapore, our security forces are able to circumvent these terrorists.

Let these Christmas trees remind all of us that peace and joy reign in the hearts of those who believe in the spirit of giving and forgiving.
