    Get For Me: Survey on Singaporeans' loyalty

     In a recent survey conducted by the Institute of Policy Studies on 1451 Singapore citizens aged 15 to 64, 3 in 4 Singaporeans said they would not turn their backs and flee the country in the event of war while 2 in 3 said they would defend the country even if it meant losing their lives.

     Here are some of the findings:                                     % who agree/strongly agree

     I am proud to be a Singaporean                                                                               97%

     Singapore is the only place where I feel completely at home                          89%

     I would feel upset if I saw anyone burning the national flag                             88%

     I am not concerned whether I am a Singapore citizen or not                           17%

     I feel annoyed whenever people criticise Singapore                                         76%

     I remain a Singapore citizen because I have nowhere else to go now          29%

     Given the right opportunity elsewhere, I would be willing to give up           31%

     my Singapore citizenship

     I think of myself as a citizen of the world and not of any country                  50%

     in particular

     It does not matter to me which country I am a citizen of, as long as            48%

     I can attain a high standard of living

     I will support Singapore even if it requires me to perform                            78%

     compulsory service in the interest of the nation

     The survey used questions developed by the National Opinion Research Centre in Chicago, USA.

The Australian-registered doctor caught practising here without a licence and importing medicine without a permit was fined a total of S$20 000 in a district court yesterday.
