To set the mood for National Day Parade 2002, this year’s Pre-Parade Segment is designed to be fun and entertaining. This one-hour segment will be packed with exciting items, including spectacular group performances as well as interactive activities that will draw the audience.

The key highlights for this year’s pre-parade include the following:

  a) "Heartbeat of a Caring Nation". This Ethnic Drum Ensemble is a rousing performance by 400 drummers from the People’s Association. They will be using drums that represent the four main ethnic groups in Singapore and the rhythm that they create will represent the heartbeat of A Caring Nation.

  b) Emcees. The emcees for NDP 02 will be an exciting mix of veterans as well as newcomers. Together they will be whipping up audience participation and enthusiasm. They will also introduce the interactive items in the fun pack and prepare the spectators for a good time of active participation in the Show. The emcees for this year are Gurmit Singh, Sharon Au, Adrian Pang, Haney Alhadad and Andrea de Cruz.

  c) “Strength to Strength”. As 2002 marks the 35th year of National Service, the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), the Singapore Police Force (SPF) and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) will be putting up a thrilling performance to commemorate this milestone.

  d) Youths of Singapore. The youths will play a big part in this year’s Pre-Parade as seen in performances adapted from the enhanced Singapore Youth Festival, the School Bands Competition and the Combined Schools’ Choir, showcasing the vibrancy and creativity of our youths.

Apart from these performances, there will be other refreshing features in this year’s Pre-Parade. To enhance spectator interaction throughout the parade, 600 “Motivators” from the 10 ITEs and Temasek Polytechnic will be interacting with the audience, distributing goodies to kids and urging everyone on to have a good time together. They will encourage the audience in the use of the interactive kit and help in the teaching of the fun dance.

There will also be 70 “Anchor Talents” from the National Volunteer Centre, Touch Community Services, NUS Juggling Group and Beyond Circus who will be entertaining the spectators with stilt walking, juggling, balloon sculpturing and rope tricks. This will add to the carnival atmosphere as the spectators move into the stadium and as they await the start of the Pre-Parade.

The entertaining items and the interactive mood of the Pre-parade segment will combine to create an exciting prelude to the Parade and the Show for NDP 2002.
