Practice Performing Arts School presents The Art & Culture of India series

Bharatanatyam - Multifaceted Dynamic Dance of the Indian Nation is the name of the first lecture in the Practice Lectures on the Arts & Culture of India. The lecture will be held on Saturday 31 Aug 2002 at the Singapore Art Museum from 2.30pm to 5pm.

It will be presented by the Practice Performing Arts School's Theatre Training & Research Programme (TTRP), a contemporary actor training programme encompassing theatre systems from Asia and Europe.

Learn about the origins and development of arguably the oldest dance form of India – the Bharatanatyam - through an analysis of its aesthetic, stagecraft, costumes, themes, forms and content.

Speaker Avanthi Meduri is the Academic and Artistic Director of the Centre for Contemporary Culture, New Delhi. She is also a professor, scholar and practitioner of Indian dance and contemporary theatre.

Dr Meduri, will also look at the place of Bharatanatyam in the performing arts of India and the World, Rukimini Devi’s influence, the music and vocal traditions that have been associated with the dance and other allied art forms, like temple sculpture.

Tickets at S$21 (adults), S$16 (Friends of the Museums, NHB Season Pass Holders and Docents of ACM & SAM), and S$12 (students, NSF & people aged 55 years and above).

Lecture 2:

7 Sept 2002, 2.30pm – 5pm Singapore Art Museum : Prof Kamala Ganesh, an anthropologist at the University of Mumbai, will speak on Indian identity and culture .

Lecture 3:

21 Sept 2002, 2.30pm – 5pm Asian Civilisations Museum, Empress Place : Mr Sadanand, a noted writer and critic based in Chennai, will speak on contemporary performance and theatre in India.
