Monday with the Editor: Of ang pows and guinea pigs

Mdm Kang's Kitchen Chilli Crab

  Hi everyone

The fifteen days of the Chinese New Year are fast drawing to a close. Tomorrow is Chap Goh Meh, which is Hokkien (dialect) meaning 15th night.

That's when the immediate family members gather for another feast in the evening, to celebrate the close of the lunar new year festivities.

The economy may not be in good health lately, but with ang pows (red packets) to go around, children find this period of time a most profitable and enjoyable one. They also get to buy things which they normally would think twice about buying.

Just yesterday, my wife and I went searching for a small guinea pig to keep as a pet. Her sister had bought one a week ago and my wife had found the pet lovable. It was well-behaved and didn't bite, unlike a hamster. And it would sit patiently in the palms of her hands. So we travelled all the way from Hougang to Chong Pang, in the north of Singapore, to the pet shop which sold guinea pigs, among other pets. Her sister had said there was a score of these little creatures still available for sale.

But, when we reached the place, we found all the guinea pigs had been sold, save for two adult ones. My wife didn't fancy either of them. We asked the shop owner about their brisk guinea pig business.

The shop owner let out that the people who bought the guinea pigs were children; they used their ang pow money to pay for the purchases!

So it would seem, economic downturn or not, life still goes on as usual for children. Sometimes, I wish I could take life the way they do. Believe me, it isn't wishful thinking. Even as we tighten our purse strings in this period of time, we can still splurge on some things we take a fancy to. It's good for taking away the stress. Economic downturn or not, my wife spends money on handbags - she gets one or two a month - and it keeps her happy. And if she is happy, of course I will have more peace around the house, ha ha ha.

Anyway, her handbags cost only about S$20 - S$40 each, after discount. Cash may be harder to come by these days, but it doesn't mean that we have to deprive ourselves of simple pleasures, does it?

  Have a good day!
