Monday with the Editor: Singapore Cemetery Online Memorials revamped

In May 2000, we started the Singapore Cemetery Online Memorials. It's been 2˝ years since but the take-up rate among Singaporeans has been very dismal.

By and large, Singaporeans have not warmed up to the idea of having online memorials for their departed loved ones, be they people or pets. This is although in the western countries, online memorials are part of the culture.

It most likely means we are conservative in this area, though we have assimilated many western ideas and practices. It cannot be that we are superstitious, as I don't quite see the difference between placing an Online Memorial and having a tablet at a temple as both allow us to visit our departed loved ones as and when we want to.

Of course, I am not talking about the practice of putting the remains of people in columbariums. That's a different thing altogether.

Indeed, we appear to be ahead of the times here in Singapore in having an Online Memorial site for Singaporeans to make use of. We may be lacking in clients wishing to utilise the memorial services, but I believe that given time, our people will accept the idea of going onto the Internet to pay a visit to a dear departed.

Therefore, instead of closing down the Online Memorial site, we have revamped it. Our site now sports a more serene look in order to entice clients. We have lowered our prices quite a bit. We have also introduced the option of letting clients have private memorials accessible via passwords at no extra cost.

And we have added a new feature too - letting visitors to the memorials upload messages and pictures of flowers or gifts, such as teddy bears, at the respective memorials for individuals or pets.

It may take a few more years before our Singapore Cemetery's Online Memorials become popular, but we will not despair. We will wait for that time to come. We were the first to be set up in Singapore, but we will not be the first to give up. There's another local Online Memorial site -  - which came online in late 2000. It's still around.

In the meantime, to commemorate the opening of the revamped memorial site, we are offering FIVE free pet memorials to visitors to the Web site. To apply, just send an e-mail to the Each pet memorial, usually costing S$25, comes free with the following features:

  - a one-page memorial

  - a five-year free membership

  - upload flowers/gifts feature

  - login via UserID and password

This free offer ends on 31 Dec 2002 at midnight.

Merry Christmas, everyone!
