LASALLE-SIA Arts Connections - Transmission02: Utopia

LASALLE-SIA Arts Connections is a quarterly newsletter of LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts. Their July-September 2002 issue spotlights Transmission02: Utopia. An excerpt of the article appears below:

Source: phunkstudio.com

"William TAN, Melvin CHEE, Alvin TAN and Jackson TAN, who formed the award-winning design collective :phunk(studio) in 1998, have successfully launched Transmission02: Utopia - a limited edition book of works in graphic design, illustration, fashion, photography, motion graphics, architecture and text made exclusively for the project by more than 50 established and emerging international artists.

"Conceptualised, compiled and edited by :phunk, the book reflects collaborative explorations in design and paves the way for new directions in visual communication. 'In addition to putting homegrown talent on the global map, Utopia is a platform to explore new grounds in the ever-expanding world of design and communication,' says Jackson.

"Transmission02: Utopia is the first design project of its kind in Singapore that has attracted the interest and support of the international and Singaporean design community.

"The artists featured in the book include Andre Weismayr, Creative Director of Issey Miyake's youth label, Final Home; Kenji Cho, a renowned Creative Director in Japan, who recently designed the album concept for Japanese pop artiste, Utada Hikaru; Patrick Duffy, Designer for London's popular style magazine, Sleazenation; Patrick CHIA of Squeeze, Singapore's leading industrial design export selected for use in one of Philippe Starck's hotels; and Asylum Design, one of Singapore's brightest new design companies which was recently incorporated into the Duffy International Design Network.

"Launched in April 2002 at Velvet Underground in Singapore's premier dance club Zouk, the 216-page book (perfect-bound and printed in 4 colours + Hexachrome & Metallic Colours) is packaged in an individually numbered box along with a poster, T-shirt (designed by French graffiti artist Mode2), stickers and a CD-ROM (containing motion graphics, an interactive game, desktop icons, fonts and a screensaver).

"Within one month of the launch, :phunk had successfully sold more than 80 per cent of the limited-edition print run of 1,000 copies.

"The book will be launched at Magma Books, London's famous design bookstore, in August 2002...

"Transmission02: Utopia is available online through the :phunk Web site at www.phunkstudio.com and at the following specialty retail stores and book distributors around the world:

"Selectair, Australia; Page One Bookshop, Hongkong; On Sundays, Tokyo, Japan; Korea Overseas Publications Inc, Seoul, Korea; How & Why Books, Selangor, Malaysia; Basheer Books, Page One Bookshop and How & Why Books, Singapore; Analogue, Edinburgh, UK; Magma Books, London, UK; Giant Robot, Los Angeles, USA; www.creativebase.com, www.T26.com..."
