The Morning People - a play in English

Click logo to start tour

Mdm Kang's Kitchen Chilli Crab

The Morning People, a play by internationally renowned playwright CHAY Yew, is set to open here from 6 - 8 June 2002 at 8pm at the Victoria Theatre in conjunction with the Singapore Arts Festival. The play is adapted from Anton Chekhov's (1860 - 1904) The Cherry Orchard. The Cherry Orchard was Chekhov's final masterpiece before he died six months later.

The Toy Factory Theatre Ensemble's interpretation of this timeless masterpiece sets the stage, not in Russia, but in Manchuria at the end of the Qing Dynasty.

This theatrical feast, directed by GOH Boon Teck, stars LIM Kay Siu, NEO Swee Lin, Emma YONG, Beatrice CHIA, Janice KOH, Rodney Oliverio, Hossan LEONG and Gerald CHEW.

The play is about the lady of an aristocratic household who returns after spending many years in London. She is met with the inevitable pending sale of her prized property - the cherry orchard. Her pathetic attempts at preventing a lost empire from crumbling introduce us to the drama and comedy of a world where people of several generations clash with irreconcilable ideologies and passions.

She says, "I never liked this house before. But losing it has made me feel a part of me, a part of my history, will be lost without it. And it can never be replaced. This house with its rooms and gardens in which I breathed will only breathe in hazy corners of memory. And soon, I won't remember how this room looked, how the house felt, how the garden smelled."

If that statement doesn't draw your curiosity, many things will not. Act now! Book a date to see a likeness of the part of you that yearns for the nostalgic yesteryears. See if you can touch your own past through the magic of the actors on stage.

  Tickets at S$42, S$32, S$22, S$16. SISTIC Hotline (65) 6348 5555 or call (65) 6222 1526 (Toy Factory). The play is 155 minutes long (with intermission).
