The making of an Olive-backed Sunbird's nest

Click logo to start tour

Mdm Kang's Kitchen Chilli Crab

It is not every day that you get birds coming into your home kitchen to build a nest. And It is an even rarer occasion when a pair of Olive-backed Sunbirds decide to set up their nest on a branch of the bougainvillea plant in your kitchen.

Well. that's exactly what has happened to my kitchen on the fourth storey of an HDB block in Hougang. These two sunbirds have been coming in and going out all through the mornings and the afternoons in the past week. And they have been slowly but surely building their love nest right in my kitchen - next to the casement windows.

One will keep watch while the other flies in with a twig or two and begins to weave a nest out of these materials. When I am busy typing away at my notebook, they will carry on with their little activities unperturbed some two metres away from me.

I am naturally curious - why would a pair of sunbirds want to build a home here in my house? Perhaps, because it's out of the rain, maybe because there is hardly anyone in the house since I am the only one around most weekdays. Or perhaps, it's because I have two pet turtles and a Flower Horn fish in the kitchen as well. That could, well, entice them to come in too, since they could have felt that tiny creatures were welcome in the house.

Whatever the reason, I have no quarrels with these birds' decision to move in. In fact, I think it's a good sign. I am sure some of you bird lovers out there may wish to be kept updated on the building of the nest, so I am posting pictures of the whole process of their nest building here. I didn't take any pictures when these birds first started building the nest as I wasn't sure what they were doing then.

Of course, I am perfectly clear now, since the nest has begun to look like one. So, do hop in to this page for a daily update. I shall be taking a picture every evening starting from today. To look at them, please click HERE!

Hope you enjoy this little activity too!

Apologies for the mistake in earlier naming of the species of the bird
