Encircle - A photograph exhibition by Frank Pinckers

Source: Alliance Française

Encircle is the name of a photograph exhibition by Belgian photographer Frank Pinckers. It will be staged at the Société Générale Gallery from 11 - 23 Jan 2003.

Pinckers moved to Singapore in 1992. He is well-known among the advertising community for his work on major accounts. This exhibition, the first in Singapore, is a way for him to continue as well as develop his personal work, following two exhibitions already held in Belgium.

The exhibition showcases new images taken in Asia and beyond as well as a distillation of the photographer’s last 10 years in Singapore. Divided in two parts, the exhibition comprises a series of color panoramic landscapes from Tunisia, Bali and Singapore and a collection of black and white portraits in triptych.

The title Encircle evokes the very present circle shape in each photograph, either inserted in the landscape, or surrounding the subject.

The collection started with pictures I took in the circular rear view mirror of my scooter while I was riding around Singapore, later it grew into more elaborate compositions using a circle to frame images, or parts of images. I wanted to return to the things that first surprised me about Asia, a rambutan, a plastic bag filled with tea, some of the amazing characters you encounter; icons which you don’t see in Europe."

This is not a retrospective, rather it is a collection of photographs I wanted to take; it is photography unrestricted by the constraints of the commercial world."

Watch out for a special viewing of the exhibition with Frank Pinckers on Saturday 18 January at 2 pm, in the Gallery.
