YMCA Singapore turns 100

The YMCA here turns 100 this year. It celebrated its centenary with a big bang - the launch last Saturday of a book entitled The Y: First 100 Years In Singapore, 1902 - 2002 authored by Raymond Flower, a renowned historian whose works include Raffles: The Story of Singapore.

Says Senior Minister LEE Kuan Yew in the foreword to the new book, "The YMCA is part of our history. It made for a better society. I believe it can continue to make a contribution to our future." So, the YMCA has stayed relevant in these modern times. It has survived two world wars and the restive early independence years.

How did a Christian group assimilate itself seamlessly into the fabric of Singaporean society over the years? The answer? By disregarding differences in race, creed and religion in serving the recreational needs of the community.

Today, the YMCA here continues to dish out reasonably-priced safe accommodation for families and individuals who happen by Singapore. It also provides schooling for some 400 foreign students from the region, including China.

If you hop by the place on a lazy afternoon, you will not miss these students, in the familiar white uniform with the YMCA emblem, thronging the hall and entrance areas. You will also not miss noticing the polite mannerisms of these students as they accept your gesture of holding the door open for them on your way out of the Gents, etc.

If that first impression is representative of the good work which the YMCA does, it augurs well for the future of the organisation. Cheers to you, YMCA! And many more good years ahead!
