Performance of the Singapore economy in 2nd quarter 2002

Singapore’s economy improved from the 1.5% contraction in 1Q02 to grow by 3.9% in 2Q02, the first expansion (year-on-year) in 5 quarters. Growth momentum (on an annualised quarter-on-quarter basis) continued to pick up, from 8.1% in the last quarter to 14% in 2Q02.

Sources of Growth

Total demand turned around from the 8.4% decline in 1Q02 to grow by 4.4%. External demand rose by 4.5%, up from the 8.5% drop in 1Q02. This comes on the back of the recovery in the major economies and global electronics demand. Both manufacturing exports and services exports improved further with a pick up in exports of electronics and transport-related services respectively.

Domestic demand rose by 4.0 per cent, up from –8.3 per cent in the previous quarter. This was mainly led by a slowdown in inventory cutbacks due to better business conditions. Both private consumption expenditure (PCE) and gross fixed capital formation (GFCF) saw a more moderate decline.

Sectoral Performance

On the sectoral level, performance was mixed with wholesale & retail trade, transport & communications and in particular manufacturing showing improvements while construction and financial services worsened (see Annex).

The Manufacturing Sector saw the biggest improvement, with an expansion of 14% in 2Q02, after 4 quarters of decline. The main growth impetus came from the chemicals & chemical products industry, which surged by 87%, mainly due to higher production in the pharmaceuticals industry. The electronics industry grew by 1.8%, the first since 2Q01, on the back of output increases in the data storage, semiconductor and key modules/components segments.

Other industries registering positive growth include transport equipment, medical & precision instruments, electrical machinery, fabricated metal products, rubber & plastics products, paper products, and petroleum products. The printing & publishing industry, however, slumped by 12% with fewer print jobs.
