Windsurfing - Walking on water

Mdm Kang's Kitchen Chilli Crab

By Rachel Charis NG

Top lady windsurfer in Singapore

Proudly Sponsored by: Gaastra, AHD, Oakley & Teva.

Windsurfing allows you to walk on water - to tread on areas where others could not. The space and freedom, the horizons and the evening twilight, even an occasional rainbow are amenities few sports offer. You can be yourself; with nothing to prove, no one to impress.

It is a relationship of oneness between the sailor and the elements - the speed and the thrills, splashes and adrenaline high - a perfect escapade for the office-bound man or woman. Windsurfing is a lifestyle, a little more than a sport that gives you that windblown hair and bronze tan; it is a passion for life!

  Why Not Me?

Gone are the days when the 'it's WHO you know' people who get to do windsurfing. Beginners also tend to think that strength is the major criteria.

Windsurfing is a unique multi-skilled sport that requires some strength, an adventurous spirit, determination, practice, patience, balance, mobility and finally, time. Strength limitation should never be a means for deterrence especially for ladies since many ladies are living proof that windsurfing is not all of brawn but brains as well.

Technological advancement in windsurfing equipment can be described as almost phenomenal in the last 30 years. There is a wide range of sails of sizes from 2.5-metre square to 12-metre square to suit anyone from an 8-year-old boy to a 7-foot hunk.

For boards, the long and short of it is that longboards can be used by all levels of sailors in all wind strengths which is more practical in light wind waters. Shortboards are more suited for experienced sailors and require higher winds.

Shortboards are more difficult to sail than longboards, but are faster, more maneuverable and spectacular. The most recent equipment fever must be the Formula class (3 sails, 1 board & 2 fins) which is acclaimed to have taken over as the most popular windsurfing class.
