Tommy KOH appointed chairman of National Heritage Board

Professor Tommy Koh, Ambassador-at-Large, has been appointed as the new Chairman of National Heritage Board (NHB) with effect from
1 Aug 2002 for a three-year term.

He takes over from Mr Lim Chee Onn, Chairman of Keppel Corp, who has led NHB for nine years since its formation in 1993. As NHB's founding Chairman, Mr Lim Chee Onn built up NHB to be a leading institution in the heritage sector.

NHB today runs five museums viz. the Singapore History Museum, the Asian Civilisations Museum (Tao Nan), the Singapore Art Museum, the Singapore Philatelic Museum and Reflections at Bukit Chandu, as well as institutions such as the National Archives, the Oral History Centre and the Heritage Conservation Centre.

With the opening of the Asian Civilisations Museum at the Empress Place Building next year, NHB will have six museums.

Mr Lim has also led NHB to go beyond the confines of exhibitions in the museums. He emphasized public education and outreach, and introduced various programmes to promote heritage awareness and involvement.

Examples include the travelling exhibitions to community centres and shopping malls, the annual Heritage and Museum Festivals, school visit programmes, heritage corners in schools, marking of historic sites, and the support for setting up heritage centres and private museums. These programmes have greatly raised heritage awareness amongst Singaporeans.

As the new Chairman, Professor Tommy Koh is well-placed to lead NHB forward. Prof Koh is well regarded in the arts and heritage community in Singapore.. He was the founding Chairman of the National Arts Council, and is well known for his passion for the arts.. The arts community holds him out as an outstanding patron. Prof Koh has also been leading the development of the Chinese Heritage Centre, as a well connected diplomat and intellectual.
