A Last Look At The Drama Centre
It's true. Another of Singapore's landmarks will
close on 15 Jul 2002. The Drama Centre in
Fort Canning Hill, as we know it, will soon remain
only in our memories. The
closure is to facilitate the expansion of the
neighbouring Singapore History Museum accessible
from the Drama Centre through a back gate.
Drama Centre was completed in 1955, the same year
in which a nearby landmark - Van Cleef Aquarium -
was opened. It was initially the Cultural Centre
until May 1980 when it was taken over by the
government and renamed The Drama Centre.
1984, with the government's upgrading of the
centre, the seating capacity was 326 and there
were four multi-function rooms for rehearsals and
of the Stage Club of Singapore bade a fond
farewell to the Drama Centre from 15 to 18 May
2002 with their production of THE LAST COARSE
of us will have fond memories of the place as we
spent some time there while we were youngsters. I
remember participating in my school's annual Drama
Festivals at the centre during my secondary school
remember the fun we had those days. Yes. I say
again - those days - because they will never come
back again. Our memories of things past will never
fail to be jolted whenever we drive past the Drama
Centre or hear about it in the newspapers.
recall the past, I remember an old classmate, T.
Sasitharan, who acted with me in two plays our
class staged at The Drama Centre when we were in
Sec three and Sec four. I am sure many of you
recognise the name. Sasi has gone on to bigger
things while I am still finding my way around.
sad, isn't it, that The Drama Centre as we know it
will cease to exist soon, except in our memories.
Why isn't there a place here in Singapore for the
little icons of our young yesteryears?
