Objecthink! - Old Artefacts in the Modern History of Singapore

Mdm Kang's Kitchen Chilli Crab

Those of us who were born in the sixties and earlier might wish to visit the Singapore History Museum to stroll down memory lane into the 1950's, 1960's and early 1970's to take a look at common-place things which held a place in our hearts.

Along the way, we might even stop and let these old artefacts rekindle old feelings - long forgotten - within us as we recall our past. We might even wish the good old days were here again!

But the younger generation - born in the 1980's and beyond - may find these old things on display a bit 'dusty'. They may ask - why bother to look at such things; I mean, we throw out all these stuff whenever we move house!

Oh yes! We do throw them out into the corridor landings. And rag-a-bone men will collect them and then sell them to shops dealing in such stuff. Finally, the old things come into another's personal collection as investment items or mere keepsakes - albeit at high prices.

So it is actually a cycle. The new become the old and the old get new treatment from enlightened collectors - except, ordinary folk like us may not get to appreciate such old things anymore simply because they have gone into private collections.

The Singapore History Museum's display of old artefacts in our modern history is a demonstration that old things need not go out of circulation. We do get a chance to journey down memory lane at such public displays; we do get a chance to relive old times again through looking at them.

The exhibition is a treat for nostalgic eyes. If you can't visit the museum yet, take a peek at these artefacts by clicking HERE!
