Ministry of Law launches Law Town and LegalConnect Web sites

The Ministry of Law has launched two new websites, Law Town and LegalConnect. Law Town will facilitate the public in their search for information on legal matters and law-related agencies while LegalConnect will provide a platform for Singapore lawyers working overseas to keep in touch with those in our local legal industry.

Law Town ( www.lawtown.gov.sg

Frequently asked questions on legal matters by the man on the street such as whether you need to engage a lawyer to draft your will, can you still pay your traffic fine without going to court after the offer for composition has expired, or how to apply for custody of your children, can now be easily obtained from a new one-stop legal portal called Law Town.

Law Town is the latest addition to the fifteen existing Towns residing on the Singapore Government's eCitizen website.

Culling the widest range of commonly sought legal information presently found on websites of agencies such as the Supreme Court and Subordinate Courts, Law Society of Singapore, Intellectual Property Office of Singapore and Singapore Mediation Centre, LawTown packages and presents them in a friendly, easy-to-use interface to meet the lifestyle needs of people.

Harnessing information technology, Law Town brings information on Singapore's laws and legal system closer to the people, in a one-stop portal with just a few clicks. Law Town is developed by the Ministry of Law with the assistance of the Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) and the Managing For Excellence Office (MFE) of the Ministry of Finance.

LegalConnect ( www.legalconnect.org.sg )

The geographical distance between Singapore lawyers working overseas and their local counterparts will be 'bridged' with the launch of LegalConnect, an initiative by the Legal Policy Division of the Ministry of Law to provide a cyber platform to keep our overseas lawyers informed of developments in the local legal scene, gather feedback on legal reform and developments in other countries and to assist the local legal fraternity to network with those working overseas.

LegalConnect contains a Forum where everyone in the legal profession and industry can register for free and post their views on any legal issues of concern to them. The objective of the Forum is to encourage and generate a healthy discussion and lively exchange of views and comments about the legal scene here and overseas. It is a new grapevine for Singapore lawyers working overseas to touch base and "meet" with local practitioners in cyberspace.

There are currently about 60 members registered with LegalConnect. They include lawyers working in Hong Kong, United Kingdom, United States, China, Australia and Vietnam.
