Christmas Light-Up 2001 - lights off tonight!

Click logo to start tour

Mdm Kang's Kitchen Chilli Crab

Tonight, the Christmas lights which have been illuminating the Orchard Road shopping belt since 17 Nov 2001 will be switched off as the Christmas festive season draws to a close.

But, have you ever wondered what went on behind the scenes to make this massive display of mesmerising lights possible?

The 2001 Christmas Light-up, named Frozen Aurora, was created through the use of 80,000 holographic tubes and 2,026 projectors, which together transformed Orchard Road into a sea of celestial lights, bringing the rarely seen Aurora effect to tropical Singapore.

As with the Icy Galaxy theme for the 2000 Christmas Light-up, the designer was Louis Clair of Light Cibles and the main sponsor, Hitachi Group of Companies. The project manager was Intraco Ltd.

Singapore Tourism Board (STB), together with the National Council of Social Services, has been responsible for bringing you this delightful experience every year for the past 14 years. The aim has always been to raise funds for charity. This time, the funds raised were meant for some 300,000 beneficiaries.

Here is some statistical information on the stuff which went into the making of the Christmas Light-up:

- 4 tonnes (the weight of the Arch)

- 10.5 m (the height of the Arch)

- 2,026 projectors used to create the effect

- 2,080 man-hours to hand-roll the tubes

- 20,000 m of steel cable to support the tubes

- 28,000 m of twisted fishing line to string the tubes

- 38,000 cable lugs to hang the tubes on the trees

- 50,000 m of electrical cables for the projectors

- 80,000 holographic tubes to create Aurora effect
