New Man - latest magazine launched

We have heard about Newater and New Economy. This month, New Man - a men's magazine - hits the streets.

New Man "would be a magazine that would feature a whole range of topics, from the tried and tested 'celebrity' interviews, to travel and sports, as well as previously uncharted territory in any men's magazine - helpful relationship features and even a section on being a father," says Agatha KOH, its publisher and editorial director in her editorial.

Its maiden September 2002 issue has 160 pages of lifestyle stuff, with plenty of sprinklings of breasts for readers to ogle at. Its cover page leads the way.

Then readers get to read about How A Woman Ages - a six-page spread with some naked bodies to capture their attention. To provide the extra oomph, its Focal Points section dwells on Bosom Buddies which talks about breasts and gets everyone excited.

Local filmmaker Eric KHOO doodles in comic sketches in this issue. He quips, "The publisher told me over a cup of coffee that I could do whatever I desired with four pages as guest editor in this magazine designed for men." See his results - FPun City - in full colour.

Ex-Showbuzz host Vivien TAN bares all about new men, ah bengs, marriage and being Mary Poppins in the main feature. She lets out to celebrity interviewer, The Necessary Stage's Haresh Sharma that "At 31, I think I am as ready as I ever will be. I don't think anyone can possibly be prepared for motherhood or fatherhood, for the responsibilities and the feelings that it brings."

So it appears New Man has articles to attract not only men but also women to its folds. Looks like a time-tested formula is in play here to ensure the new magazine stays in circulation, for local men, alone, cannot prop up a magazine. It takes the more generous Singaporean women to support magazines and whatnots here in Singapore.

The magazine retails at S$4.00. And because guys do grow up, they should keep up with the women here by reading New Man.
