Singapore's first D-I-Y library opens in Sengkang

© getforme.com

A collection of 100,000 books awaits borrowers at the new Sengkang Community Library which opens today on the fourth level of Compass Point in Sengkang.

What differentiates this new library from the others around the island is that this is Singapore's first Do-It-Yourself (DIY) library. From the moment library users step into the library to the time they leave the place, they can expect to help themselves to the services provided - all without the aid of a real-life librarian.

The following stations provide D-I-Y services:

 - Borrowers' Enquiry & Payment

 - Borrowing

 - Multimedia

 - Multimedia Pre-payment

There are also three Cybrarian kiosks to help with members' queries and problems if the need arises. Seven online cataloguing terminals are on hand to help the members locate books. The Cybrarian will even pinpoint the shelf number on a floor plan which appears on its screen.

But, library users who are not accustomed to serving themselves need not fret. Should they need assistance from a librarian, they can phone the librarian using the Cybrarian service.

New library users can sign up as library members at the Membership Registration kiosk. At this self-service kiosk, current library members can also register or renew their Premium Service membership and even make a replacement of their lost library membership card.

The cafe-within-the-library concept which has been working well since it was first adopted at library@orchard is also used here. The cafe is located just beside the six multimedia stations. Library users can indulge in a cuppa while surfing the Web or reading a book.

But what must surely impress visitors to the library is the immaculately dressed concierge at the entrance to the library. If the alarm at the entrance goes off, visitors can approach the concierge for help.

If you happen to be out of town or aren't free to hop over to the new place, don't worry. We are paying the new library a visit later today to take pictures of the place for your viewing pleasure. Do come back later today for a look at them.
