Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700 000 foreigners.
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Overseas scholarship
holders made the news the whole of last week after a Sunday
Times article on 9 Jul 2000 revealed that at least 25
undergraduates awarded overseas scholarships said they did not
foresee a problem in breaking their six-year scholarship bonds.
Eleven admitted they did
not intend to finish serving out their bond period. These
scholars were among 30, aged between 18 and 21, who were
interviewed. What made matters worse was that some could afford
to pay for their overseas studies but chose to get a scholarship
because of the prestige element.
The finding led to a
barrage of letters to The Straits Times by readers outraged that
such scholars had deprived others needy of scholarships from
getting them.
The Public Service
Commission, Public Service Division and 20 statutory boards sent
a joint statement to The Straits Times on 11 Jul 2000 telling scholarship
holders who were planning to break their bonds to do the right
thing and give up their scholarships, before going to university
"under false pretenses".
The Straits Times
editorial of 13 Jul 2000 rightly pointed out that more such
people could be thrown up by secondary schools and junior
colleges unless these "impressionable minds" are put
right as "those with no ethical perception of right and
wrong are a liability to employers, state or public".

ECONOMY
Singapore's economy grew at
a strong 8.5% in the first half of the year following another period of
fast growth in the second quarter. Boosted by the galloping expansion in
the manufacturing sector, the April-June growth rate is expected to be a
sizzling 7.7%.
Consumer prices fell by 0.4%
in Jun 2000, as lower costs of transport, communications and clothing
more than offset rises in housing, health and education and stationery. The consumer price index (CPI) for March 2000
dipped by 0.3% compared to February 2000. Food prices fell by 1.6% due
mainly to cheaper seafood, vegetables and fresh pork. The cost of
transport and communications fell by 0.2% due to falling car prices. The CPI is used as an inflation gauge by
measuring the change in the prices of a fixed basket of goods purchased
commonly by most households. The Government has forecast that inflation will
be within 2% this year. |
