In Singapore

19-year-old Pamela Yiau died soon after drinking some Bourbon and Coca Cola at a friend's house last month, but it was the drug, Ecstasy, which killed her and not the alcohol, according to a letter from the Institute of Science and Forensic Medicine. It said that the cause of death was Ecstasy poisoning.

Tong Hyui Koh, 34, was yesterday sentenced to six months' jail for hosting a pay-to-view porn site at www.clubscandals.com between November 1998 and February 1999.

PM Goh Chok Tong told the British newspaper, The Financial Times, in a recent interview that, within months, Singapore might designate an open space, a kind of Speakers' Corner, where people can voice their opinions in public.

Asia

Taipei:  Opposition wins in Taiwan. Pro-Independence President-Elect Chen extends an olive branch to a Beijing that did not want him to win.

Around the world

New York:  The American magazine industry will lose one of its oldest and best-known titles when Life published its last monthly issue.. But parent company Time Inc said it will continue to put our occasional issues for special events.

Washington: President Clinton announced on Friday that Smith & Wesson had agreed that within 60 days it would begin providing external trigger-locking devices with all the guns. It also agreed that within three years, any new handgun it developed would include "smart gun" technology allowing only the gun owner to fire the weapon.
