Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700,000 foreigners.

A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Singapore's water is clean and safe to drink from the tap. There is no need to boil it.

Former General Post Office (GPO) building reopens as The Fullerton Hotel

Mdm Kang's Kitchen Chilli Crabs

The 72-year-old Fullerton Building in Fullerton Square reopened yesterday as the luxury Fullerton Hotel after a S$400 million makeover which started in 1997 when Hongkong-listed Sino Land bought the place for S$110 million. Fullerton Building was previously the General Post Office (GPO).
Fullerton takes its name from Robert Fullerton who was the Governor of Singapore from 1826 to 1829. The building was completed in 1928 by the architects Keys & Dowdeswell who left their pseudo-classical mark on their buildings. Keys & Dowdeswell left Singapore in the 1930s after they were struck off the register for professional misconduct.
The new Fullerton Hotel has a champagne colour scheme throughout . There are 400 rooms available at prices ranging from S$450 to S$3,800. Its facilities include a bistro, a Chinese restaurant and a bar. A 36-seater restaurant will open shortly.
An underground tunnel stretching 35 metres allows access to cars and pedestrians from the basement car park in the new mall across the road at One Fullerton, also owned by Sino Land. The new three-storey mall is built over reclaimed land and has shops, cafes and restaurants above its basement carpark.
The Fullerton Hotel, which has its official opening planned for 31 Dec 2000, looks set to wow the hearts of Singaporeans and tourists alike into the new millennium. For more pictures, click HERE.
