Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners.
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Amahl & The Night Visitors - A musical
celebration of Christmas
Amahl & The
Night Visitors is a tender and inspiring story about
the meaning of Christmas. Written in 1951, the musical's
world premiere performance was televised nationally on
NBC's Hallmark Hall Of Fame and repeated for 16
This 45-minute musical
will be staged at CHIJMES Hall from 18 - 22 Dec 2000
at 7.30pm and 9.00pm daily. It stars Jessica Fritz as
Amahl; Cynthia Heininger as Amahl's mother; John Morrison,
Kipi Fifita and Robert Horn as the three kings; and
Juwanda Hassim as the page.
The musical tells the
story of a young, crippled shepherd boy, Amahl, and his
mother who were visited by three kings on a star-guided
journey. Together, they witness a miracle. With a
hauntingly beautiful score and a touching libretto by
Menotti, Amahl has been described by Life Magazine as a
musical that "is likely to become America's most
endearing contribution to Christmas lore since "A
Visit From Nicholas".
