Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700 000 foreigners.
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Gas-pipe installation code to be reviewed

Recently, a youth died in his
bedroom due to a gas leak from concealed pipes which were
damaged during kitchen-cabinet-fitting work.
The Singapore
Standard Code of Practice for the installation of pipes
supplying manufactured gas adopts internationally-accepted
practices for gas installations. But, in view of what happened,
the Singapore Productivity and Standards Board, the national
standards body, will review the Code in consultation with the
Public Utilities Board (PUB), PowerGas Ltd and the industry. All
suggestions will be considered.
PowerGas, the
piped gas supplier, implements a system of safety checks before
the gas supply is turned on. For detection of gas leaks, it
injects an odorant into the manufactured gas, giving it a
distinctive smell. Users, including home owners, must be
vigilant and able to detect leaks when these leaks occur.
Should you
suspect a gas leak, you should turn off the gas valve at the
meter, and open all the windows and doors in order to ventilate
the place. You should also call PowerGas's 24-hour Gas Service
& Operations Centre at Tel: (65) 1800-752 1800. You should
refrain from turning on/off switches and electrical equipment
and leave the premises if the smell is intoxicating.
Any work
involving gas-pipe connection or installation can only be
carried out by PowerGas or a Licensed Gas Service Worker (LGSW)
who are licensed by the PUB. A list of LGSWs can be found on the
PUB's website at www.pub.gov.sg.
You can also call PUB at Tel: (65) 7313645 for information on
LGSWs.

Prizes worth S$20,000 will
be up for grabs when Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) launches its print
and online integrated newspaper, Project Eyeball, tomorrow. The launch
party will be held at the Shaw House amphitheatre in Orchard Road from

free during the launch. The same number of free copies will be handed
out from Monday to Friday next week, SPH said in a statement yesterday.
A taxi driver was found dead
on Wednesday at a deserted location with multiple stab wounds. Koh Ngiap
Yong, 42, had been stabbed four times in the back and once in the neck.
His body was found dumped face up in bushes 5m from Chestnut Avenue in
Upper Bukit Timah Road. His TIBS taxi was not at the scene. Mr Koh is
the second taxi driver to be murdered this year. On 15 Jun 2000, Comfort
driver Ong Huay Dee was found dead in his cab at Pasir Ris Drive 10.
The Speakers' Corner in Hong
Lim Park will be opened on 1 Sep 2000. The opening date was announced by
the police in a statement yesterday.
Certificate of Entitlement

round of bidding. The increase bucks a trend which had seen prices for
cars of 1600 cc and below falling for the past four months.

Kuala Lumpur: Selangor
Mentri Besar Datuk Abu Hassan Omar quit unexpectedly yesterday, citing

Washington: The number of
people behind bars in the United States broke the two-million mark last
year, a record high despite the slowest prison population growth rate in
20 years, according to the Justice Department. At the end of 1999,
prisons and jails held 1,890,800 inmates with the bulk of them held by
state authorities, according to a Bureau of Justice statistics report
released on Wednesday.
