Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700 000 foreigners.
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Hi everyone
Thank
goodness the law will be amended soon to weed out rogue
commodity-trading firms in Singapore. In the past year, there
have been complaints from investors who were hoodwinked into
signing contracts with such firms which subsequently lost the
investors' money.
The rogue
firms' modus operandi is this - they place out advertisements in
the local newspapers for vacant positions to be filled.
Unsuspecting job-seekers turn up for what they think are job
interviews. During such interviews, the job-applicants are
"persuaded" to open accounts to invest in the
commodity firm's trading activities. As the job-seekers are also
"persuaded" to sign trading contracts with the firms,
they have no choice but to pay up.
Following
complaints from investors, nine bucket shops, as such firms are
commonly known, were banned in March 1999 from offering job
advertisements which were misleading. In spite of this, such
advertisements are on the rise again.
Trade &
Industry Minister, George Yeo told Parliament on 30 Jun 2000
that the Commodity Futures Act, which currently regulates rubber
and coffee trading, would be expanded to cover all commodities
and associated derivatives.
It may take
some months before the new law is approved by Parliament and
implemented. In the meantime, I would advise all job-seekers to
be on the alert lest they should fall prey to such dubious
schemes which promise rich rewards, but in reality bring about
huge losses.

ECONOMY Consumer prices fell by 0.4%
in Jun 2000, as lower costs of transport, communications and clothing
more than offset rises in housing, health and education and stationery. The consumer price index (CPI) for March 2000
dipped by 0.3% compared to February 2000. Food prices fell by 1.6% due
mainly to cheaper seafood, vegetables and fresh pork. The cost of
transport and communications fell by 0.2% due to falling car prices. The CPI is used as an inflation gauge by
measuring the change in the prices of a fixed basket of goods purchased
commonly by most households. The Government has forecast that inflation will
be within 2% this year. |
