Estimated population of Singapore citizens and permanent residents - 3,163,500 as at June 1998.

Chinese            77%

Malays             14%

Indians            7.6%

Other ethnic groups 1.4%

Working Language: English

Other official languages: Mandarin, Malay & Tamil.

Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700,000 foreigners.

A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Singapore's water is clean and safe to drink from the tap. There is no need to boil it.

Singapore Immigration steps up security checks for illegal immigrants at check-points

Mdm Kang's Kitchen Chilli Crabs

The Singapore Immigration and Registration (SIR) takes a serious view of attempts by
foreigners to enter into or depart from Singapore illegally. It has stepped up security checks on passengers and vehicles at all checkpoints.

Under the Immigration Act (Cap 133), a human trafficker faces a mandatory jail term of up to 5 years plus a minimum of 3 strokes of the cane.
An overstayer faces a fine up to $4000/- or a jail term up to 6 months or both if he remains unlawfully for a period up to 90 days. He will face a jail term up to 6 months plus a minimum
of 3 strokes of the cane and in lieu of caning, a fine of up to $6,000/- if he remains unlawfully for a period exceeding 90 days.
For failing to report to an immigration officer immediately prior to leaving Singapore, an offender is liable on conviction, to a fine not exceeding $1,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 6 months or to both.
On 6 Dec 2000, immigration officers from SIR's Enforcement Division mounted stepped- up operations at the Woodlands Checkpoint Departure Section to look out for attempts to smuggle immigration offenders.
At about 10.45 pm, a 23-year-old male Malaysian Chinese driving a Malaysian registered Proton Wira No. JEV 4325 was signalled by the immigration officers to stop for checks. When the car boot was opened, SIR officers found 4 persons hiding in the cramped space. The driver and the 4 immigration offenders were arrested. The car was seized.
Preliminary investigations revealed the status of the 4 persons as a 36 year-old male Indian national on a social visit pass, a 28 year-old male Thai overstayer, a 29 year-old female Thai overstayer and a 28 year-old female Thai overstayer. They claimed that they had all paid S$500 each for the arrangements
to depart Singapore illegally. The 23 year-old Malaysian trafficker was in possession of a tampered Malaysian Restricted Passport. The human trafficker and the 4 immigration offenders will be charged in court.
