Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners. |
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop. |

Monday with the Editor: Beware Of Conmen!
|
Hallo again
|
Happy New Year!
We are only eight days into the new millennium and already
some people are busy trying to snare would-be victims in
order to con them out of their money. These
unscrupulous chaps make use of a common human weakness -
greed - to entice their victims into their traps. Then,
the conmen skilfully convince their victims to part with
their money and disappear, leaving their victims much
poorer.
|
Here at getforme.com,
we are not spared the antics of the conmen. Just two days
ago, I received an e-mail from a Regina Chukwu,
purportedly from Nigeria and who says she has connections
with some late general's family. This chap said that the
surviving relatives of the general had vast amounts of
money (first batch mentioned to me was US$10 million) and
wished to entrust that huge sum to ME (yes - you heard it
right the first time ME!) for safekeeping.
|
According to the writer
of the e-mail message, I stood to gain 30% of the gross
total amount in compensation for my efforts - WOW! Isn't
that just a great pie sweetener! I mean, who could resist
such an attractive offer? And in US dollars too. I am
supposed to get greedy and be so mesmerised that I would
get on the next available plane to Lome, Republic of Tonga
(where the deal is supposed to be closed).
|
BUT, I didn't get
myself ensnared! Why not? I mean, am I really such a saint
- not an itsy bitsy greedy at all?
|
Let me tell you this -
I spent 17 years of my life working for a British bank,
and in my line of work as a banker, I have come across
many such con cases, most of which originate from Nigeria.
Things got so bad in the nineties that at one point of
time, the Central Bank of Nigeria had to wire Singapore
banks to tell them that it was not involved in any of the
scams.
|
Why am I telling you
all this? Because, for this new year, I hope and wish none
of you out there will fall prey to these conmen. Be alert
and careful - there is no such thing as a free lunch. Take
care!
