US Ambassador Richard Holbrooke hosted a luncheon for SM Lee Kuan Yew at the weekend. Mr Lee is to address the Singapore TechVenture 2000 Conference in San Francisco this week. The event, sponsored by Singapore's National Science & Technology Board and the Singapore-US Business Council, hopes to attract more high-tech investments.

To keep the e-commerce buzz from fading out, a virtual institute will be set up to promote e-learning. Companies will get government incentives to encourage them to ceate hubs of regional e-learning services and portals from Singapore, said Mr Yeo Cheow Tong, the Minister for Communications and Information Technology.

The new Singapore Turf Club at Kranji was officially opened by President S.R. Nathan yesterday night.

The experiences of different groups of foreign talent are being tracked to identify ways to help them fit into Singapore society, said Trade and Industry Ministe George Yeo. He also said the STAR committee was studying whether foreigners were using Singapore as a stepping stone into another country, or if they were sinking their roots here and starting a family.

Beijing: Chinese President Jiang Zemin yesterday re-issued China's warning that it would take "drastic measures" if Taipei dragged its feet indefinitely on reunification talks and said any foreign support for Taiwan independence was doomed to failure.

Hongkong: Hongkong is losing tourists to Singapore because flights here are too infrequent and expensive, according to a blueprint on the future of tourism in the territory.
