Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700 000 foreigners.

A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

A Bank of China deputy manager was charged in a district court yesterday with siphoning S$1.82 million of its customers' money. Lum Yue Mun, 48, a Singaporean, faces 112 forgery charges and 42 counts of criminal breach of trust. In all he faces 154 charges.

16 illegal foreign workers were nabbed in the FoodFest Foodcourt at Millenia Walk in a 30-minute raid yesterday. Seven were immigration offenders - illegal immigrants and overstayers. The rest did not have valid work permits. In the first half of this year, the Ministry of Manpower's Employment Inspectorate caught 323 illegal workers in 229 surprise inspections in the food-catering sector. Immigration offenders make up 38% of those arrested and social visit pass holders form 31%.

Zoe Tay, Queen of Caldecott Hill, has renewed her acting contract with MediaCorp Studios. MediaCorp artiste manager Lim Choon How announced the news yesterday.

New rules which require Hungry Ghost festivities to end at 10.30pm have resulted in there being less time for auctions and less money being raised for charity, said organisers of these events. The shorter hours for these auctions, which used to go on beyond 11pm, means that fewer items are put up for bidding, and there is less time for auctioneers to drum up the bids on them, they added.

More than 80 residents in Choa Chu Kang had to be evacuated from their homes to a nearby multi-storey carpark after a gas main ruptured. Police evacuated Block 278 at Choa Chu Kang Ave 3 at 10.50pm on Wednesday after they were informed about the leak from an underground gas main - barely 5m from the block.
